Biography

El Greco, a well-known painting style in the art world, is signified by bright colors, elongated figures, and its Catholic subject matter.  What is not well-known, however, is that "El Greco" was a Spanish nickname for the painter and sculptor Doménicos Theotokópoulos (1541-1614).  Theotokópoulos's famous work was done during Catholic Counter Reformation in the 16th Century.  The El Greco's style is known for its Catholic content, which is a direct result of the Church's attempt to lead Protestants back to the Catholic faith during the Counter Reformation.  The art often is seen as "mystic" or "modern" because of its surreal qualities, but some critics believe these signifiers to be a result of El Greco's poor vision.  The Greek artist studied in Venice, but reached the height of his continuing fame while in Spain.
