Elijah Jamal Balbed


Saxophonist, composer, and Washington, DC native Elijah Jamal Balbed is best known as a performing musician around town, having played with the likes of Winard Harper, Cyrus Chestnut, Lalah Hathaway, Eric Benet, Dr. John, and the late, great Chuck Brown. Balbed attended Howard University for Jazz Studies and has since recorded two albums as a leader, traveled abroad to Asia, the Middle East, South America, and the Caribbean, as well as recorded for artists such as Mike Phillips, Mark Meadows, and the Chuck Brown Band. Elijah has participated in residencies at Strathmore, Bohemian Caverns, as well as the Kennedy Center's artist development and composition program Betty Carter's Jazz Ahead, under the direction of Jason Moran. Elijah currently lives in New York, often commuting back to Washington for various performances.
