Biography

The University of Maryland School of Music combines conservatory traini ng with the robust academic curriculum of a major research university. With collaboration at the heart of the School ’ s educational ethos, students learn to approach large ensemble performance with th e leadership and communications skills practiced in chamber music. The Sch ool's distinguished faculty comprises world-class performers and pedagogues, including some of tod ay ’ s leading chamber music artists and members of the National and Baltimore Symphony Orc hestras. Upon graduating, students enter the professional world as artist-citizens and scholars, p repared and eager to enrich our present culture and community. A leading contributor to the cultural life of the campus and surround ing region, the School of Music presents over 100 performances per year that feature orchestra, band, choi rs, jazz, world music, chamber ensembles, solo recitals and two fully-staged operas at The Claric e Smith Performing Arts Center. Outside the University, School of Music student s frequently collaborate with the National and Baltimore Symphony orchestras and perform at renowned venues such as the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Strathmore and Smithsonian I nstitution. As part of the UMD College of Arts and Humanities, the School of Music represents a vibrant and diverse community of 450 student musicians from around the world.
