Daegu Genius Youth Orchestra

Daegu Genius Youth Orchestra (DGYO) is composed of professionally trained, handpicked students all of whom are potentially superior players in their respective instrument. DGYO is a unique institution in South Korea, generously supported by Daegu Education Office since September 2005. Although the musicians are young, aged between 8 and 16 years old, they perform to the highest standards, as though professionally qualified. The orchestra has a subscription series performing at least four concerts each year in addition to various special concerts and as invited guests. Each section of the orchestra is coached by professional musicians, both Korean and from other countries throughout the world.

The DGYO was formed in 2006 and was the brainchild of the renowned conductor Maestro Jae-Joon Lee who acts as the orchestra’s music director and conductor. The orchestra performs to the highest level. In February 2008, DGYO made its first concert tour to Spain visiting and performing in Madrid, Granada, Valencia and Barcelona. The tour was a great success and plans are now under way to tour to the U.S.A. in 2010.

As part of the 2009 concert series in the orchestra’s home town of Daegu, the acclaimed conductor and professor of conducting at the Glinka Conservatory in Novosibirsk, Prof. Ludmilin has been invited to conduct the orchestra in a subscription concert. In addition, several distinguished performers have also been invited to perform as soloists with DGYO.
