Canterbury Woods E.S. Strings Ensemble

Biography

The Canterbury Woods Advanced Orchestra is comprised of students from 4th through 6th grade who perform arrangements of classical music as well as string orchestra repertory by modern composers. Most of these students began instruction on their instruments in the 4th grade. A few take private lessons, but a majority receives their instruction through group lessons, once a week, during the school day. The Orchestra performs twice each year for the school community and most recently performed for the Fairfax County School Board. Individual students participate in Solo and Ensemble Festival and the Fairfax Area Orchestra. Canterbury Woods Elementary School is nestled about half an hour from our nation's capital in Annandale, Virginia. The school is an advanced academics (GT) center, offers an enhanced ABA program for students with autism in grades K – 6, and offers a Cued Speech program for students who are deaf and hard of hearing in Pre-K through grade 6. The CWES Orchestra reflects the diversity of the school population. Kate Dovgalyuk and Elizabeth Hornsby-Graham have co-directed the orchestra since 2006.
