Harvard Sailing Team

Biography

Harvard Sailing Team is a sketch group of four men and five women dedicated to spic and span humor of Ivy League standards.  Their sketch comedy is characterized by scenes transforming everyday life into absurdity and is fueled by a strong group dynamic, which integrates each member’s personal comic style. Their “clean-cut” approach is complimented by musical numbers, pop culture, and regular day-to-day awkwardness.  Harvard Sailing Team’s inclusive sense of humor and high-energy productions appeal equally to both your teenage cousin and your nana.

HST, which consists of eight NYU/Tisch School of the Arts alumni and one Hofstra University alum, began in September of 2004 as a two person writing team.  Chris Smith and Billy Scafuri were childhood friends from Rockville Centre, New York who shared an interest in comedy writing.  But it wasn’t until team members Rebecca Brey, Jen Curran, Clayton Early, Faryn Einhorn, Katie Larsen, Adam Lustick, and Sara Taylor joined one month later that they became HST.  Most members of the team have been friends since studying together at NYU’s Atlantic Theater Company Acting School.  Their familiarity with one another and shared sense of humor make rehearsal seem like summer camp.

In 2008, HST was named “Best Sketch Comedy Group” by the ECNY awards, NYC’s original comedy awards. HST has been featured at Caroline’s on Broadway, Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, Gotham Comedy Club, The Peoples Improv Theater (The PIT), Chicago SketchFest, SketchFest NYC, National College Comedy Festival, Toronto SketchFest, Charleston’s Piccolo Spoleto Arts Festival, and NY Comedy Festival’s: Longest Sketch Show Ever among others. Since September 2006 they have been housed Saturdays at The PIT and have presented five full-length original sketch shows, including their latest, “Fall Recital.”  The team’s latest videos, “Grandpa’s Wake,” “Mystic River II: Sean Penn picks up his daughter,” and “Meet the Harvard Sailing Team” were featured on CollegeHumor.com and received over 200,000 hits. HST has also been featured on “Sesame Street” and the G4 channel’s “Attack of the Show.”

“The team’s singular vision, style and point of view have set it apart from the ever-increasing number of sketch groups currently clamoring for the NY spotlight. Harvard Sailing Team doesn’t fight for the stage; it owns it.”- Time Out NY
