Biography

Sharmila Tagore, icon of the silver screen, traces her ancestry to Rabindranath Tagore and is married to Mansur Ali Khan, the Nawab of Pataudi. An actress of supreme screen presence, she was the young 14 year old heroine of the early Satyajit Ray films, Apur Sansar (Apu’s World), Devi (Goddess), Charulata and Aranyer Din Ratri (Days and Nights in the Forest) before moving to more mainstream Hindi cinema with Kashmir ki Kali (Jewel of Kashmir). She has twice been the recipient of the National Award for Cinema, and of the Lifetime Achievement Award. She is currently chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification.
