Group Cabrestero

Biography

Groupo Cabrestero is a group from Casanare in central Colombia, a region situated on the Eastern brink of the Andes Mountains. Groupo Cabrestero specializes in the Joropo, a waltz-like musical genre typically accompanied by a fast-paced stylized dance. Originally, the Joropo was played by the llaneros, the inhabitants of the Colombian Llanos (meaning “plains”). In its traditional form, the Joropo is played with bandola and cuatro, harp-like four-stringed instruments descended from the Spanish guitar; maracas introduce percussive elements, while singing accompanies the melody. The Spanish word “joropo” literally translates in English to “a party".
