Zongo Junction

Zongo Junction is generating a well-deserved buzz in New York City’s burgeoning afro-beat scene. The ensemble blends West African rhythms with funk, jazz, and soul. True to their inspiration, Nigerian superstar, political activist and afro-beat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti, the outfit excites dance floors wherever they perform.

The band, 12 pieces in total, has toured extensively throughout the East and West coasts. Highlights include a sold out show at Slim's in San Francisco on December 30, 2010, a Monday night residency at Brooklyn Bowl in June 2011 and a recent tour supporting Asheville, North Carolina heavyweights, Toubab Krewe.

The band released their debut album Thieves! on December 30, 2010. As afro-beat music has always done, the album speaks truth-to-power with humor and soul. The album’s five original songs feature long-time Mr. Kuti’s band member, Leon Kaleta Ligan-Majek, on vocals and percussion.
Zongo Junction is currently in the studio writing and recording music for a new album, which will feature FELA! cast member, Abena Koomson on vocals.  The album features an innovative combination of authentic afro-beat roots and healthy influences from the 12 members' other creative interests and experience as sidemen in bands including, TV on the Radio, Easy Star All-Stars, The Walkmen, Josh Roseman's King Froopy Allstars, Andrew D'Angelo Big Band and many more.  Look out for new music that combines experimental textures and indie-rock influences with infectiously danceable afro-beat grooves.
