Allan Lewis


Allan Lewis (Conductor) comes to The Suzanne Farrell Ballet from Les Grands Ballets Canadiens in Montreal, where he has been Conductor in Residence since 2007.  In his previous position as Music Director and Conductor of The Joffrey Ballet, he frequently had the privilege of appearing at the Kennedy Center and working with the musicians of the Opera House Orchestra.  His repertoire for Les Grands Ballets includes Balanchine's Episodes and Rubies, Bigonzetti's Four Seasons, Brandstrup's The Queen of Spades, Celis' The Lost Shoe (Cinderella), Maillot's Romeo and Juliet, Naharin's Perpetuum, Nault's The Nutcracker, Quanz's Rodin/Claudel and Tomasson's Prism.  He has also conducted the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa and the Orchestre symphonique de Québec for the company.

Mr. Lewis was on the podium for The Joffrey Ballet's historic reconstruction of Nijinsky's The Rite of Spring in Paris in 1990.  He also conducted The Joffrey's Homage to Diaghilev, starring Rudolf Nureyev, on Broadway and at Lincoln Center.  During his more than twenty years with The Joffrey, he frequently conducted Ashton's La fille mal gardée and The Dream, Cranko's Romeo and Juliet and The Taming of the Shrew, Joffrey's The Nutcracker, Massine's Parade and Les Présages, Nijinska's Les Noces and Nijinsky's Jeux.  On television, Mr. Lewis conducted three programs for Great Performances: Dance in America, produced by WNET for PBS.  He has also been Guest Conductor for New York City Ballet and National Ballet of Canada.

Mr. Lewis has conducted many orchestras worldwide including the San Francisco Symphony, St. Louis Symphony, Detroit Symphony, Calgary Philharmonic, Orchestre National de France, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, Orchestra of the Vienna State Opera, Orchestra of the Teatro Regio Turin, Orchestra of the Prague National Theater, Budapest Philharmonic and Shanghai Symphony.  On four occasions, he conducted San Francisco Opera's gala Fol de Rol, featuring Plácido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti and other operatic personalities. Particularly satisfying to him were his activities as Guest Conductor in Residence at the Conservatoire National de la Région d'Angers in France.
