CrossCurrents Dance Company

Biography

The mission of CrossCurrents Dance Company is to reveal the strength of human stories through the language of dance. CrossCurrents seeks to frame and capture the intricate web of shared experiences that connect people to one other and to larger communities. Praised by The Washington Post for its “finely etched dancing and dramatically cogent choreography,” the company is driven by the transformative power of dance and a dedication to producing concert work of high artistic caliber.

Co-artistic directors Helen Hayes and Debra Kanter, long-time dance teachers and artists in the Metropolitan D.C. dance community, bring a depth of knowledge, experience and passion to the stage. Hayes and Kanter have embraced a collective vision for their company, presenting their own choreography and commissioning new works by established and emerging choreographers. They also draw upon the diverse talents and life experiences of dancers ranging in age from 21 to 51. Past commissions have included works by Alvin Mayes, Cathy Paine, Gesel Mason, Meisha Bosma and Daniel Burkholder.

Since its inception in 1996, the Company has performed throughout the Washington Metropolitan area at venues including Dance Place, the Jack Guidone Theater, the Kreeger Auditorium at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington, the Clarice Smith Center at the University of Maryland, Gunston Performing Arts Center and the John F. Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage.

Residences and community outreach projects have included the Institute for the Arts (Fairfax County), St. Andrew’s Episcopal School, the Landon School, James Hubert Blake High School, the Washington Home, Ashburton Wyngate Child Development Center and Micah House, a transitional home for formerly homeless women in recovery from substance abuse, located in Washington, D.C. CrossCurrents Dance Company has also mentored and supported the creation of The A.O. Movement Collective, a dance company run by college students.
