Charles Wilkinson joined the National Symphony Orchestra in 1979 as assistant principal timpanist and percussionist. He received both his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music where he won the annual concerto competition two years in a row. During his years in Cleveland he performed with the Cleveland Orchestra and taught at Kent State University. In addition to the National Symphony Orchestra he has performed with many Washington area musical organizations including the Washington Opera, the Eclipse Chamber Orchestra, and the Capital Woodwind Quintet.
