Alice Kogan Weinreb, flute, joined the National Symphony Orchestra, under music director Mstislav Rostropovich, in 1979. She began her flute studies with Lois Schaefer and James Pappoutsakis of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. After earning her BA from Brandeis University, where she won the Milender Prize in music, Ms. Weinreb studied with Fernand Caratgé at the École Normale de Musique in Paris, France, under a Fulbright fellowship and was awarded the Premier Prix in flute. Returning to the United States, she became principal flutist of the Rhode Island Philharmonic, earned an MA in music at the American University, and served as the piccolo player of the Richmond Symphony, all before joining the NSO. An avid chamber music performer, Ms. Weinreb is a founding member and solo flutist of the Capitol Woodwind Quintet and the Eclipse Chamber Orchestra (ECO). With the ECO, Ms. Weinreb has premiered flute concertos by NSO cellist David Teie and NSO assistant principal bassoonist Truman Harris. She is the featured artist on the CRI recording of Margaret Brouwer's Diary of an Alien for solo flute and can be heard on the Capitol Woodwind Quintet recording, A Musical Toast, on the Americus label. In the summers, she performs at the Grand Teton Music Festival in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. A dedicated and highly sought-after teacher, she is on the faculty of The Catholic University of America and teaches in the National Symphony Youth Fellowship program.
