Assistant Principal Percussionist Kenneth Harbison became a member of the National Symphony Orchestra in 1976. Born in Huntington, West Virginia, he is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music where he earned the degree of Bachelor of Music with distinction while studying with John Beck. In addition to his degree, he was awarded the Performer's Certificate and appeared with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra as marimba soloist. While serving in The United States Army Band (Pershing's Own) in Washington, D.C., he earned his Master of Music degree from the Catholic University of America. A much sought after performer on the entire range of percussion instruments, Mr. Harbison played with the Buffalo Philharmonic and the Rochester Philharmonic before coming to the National Symphony Orchestra. In addition to his regular appearances with the National Symphony Orchestra, he has performed for the Theater Chamber Players, the Contemporary Music Forum, and the 20th Century Consort. He is a member of the faculty at George Mason University.
