Eric deWaardt

Eric deWaardt, born in Delft, Holland, began studying violin at the age of 10. At 15, he switched to the viola and began lessons with Ramon Scavelli of the National Symphony Orchestra. He went on to study at The Juilliard School of Music with William Lincer. Mr. deWaardt also attended the Eastman School, working with Atar Arad of the Cleveland Quartet; in addition, he served as Professor Arad’s teaching assistant and studied chamber music with the Cleveland Quartet. His credentials also include principal violist with both the Spoleto Festival Orchestra and the Heidelberg Opera Festival, and violist with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. Mr. deWaardt became a member of the National Symphony Orchestra in 1986.

As a recitalist, Mr. deWaardt has appeared frequently in the Washington, DC area. Nephew of Gerard deWaardt, well-known carilloner of Rotterdam’s Nieuwe Kerk, Mr. deWaardt has performed in the Netherlands with his uncle as keyboardist in both Delft and Rotterdam. Chamber music highlights include performances with the 20th Century Consort, Washington Chamber Music Society, the Camerata Players, the Manchester String Quartet, and on the National Symphony Orchestra’s chamber music series at the Jewish Community Center and the Prelude concerts on the Kennedy Center’s Millenium Stage. Mr. deWaardt has performed as soloist with the Eclipse Chamber Orchestra in performances of Benjamin Britten’s Lachrymae and has been the featured artist on a chamber music concerts at the Embassy of the Netherlands. He has appeared as a soloist with the Landon Symphonette, and the American Youth Symphonic Orchestra. Mr. deWaardt was a founding member of the National Gallery String Quartet and has recently stepped down after 8 years of very successful concerts to spend more of his time teaching.
