Biography

Bill Russell received Tony Award nominations for the book and lyrics of the original Side Show. He co-wrote book and lyrics for Off-Broadway's long-running musical Pageant and directed it in the Fringe and West End of London, L.A., Chicago, Boston, Atlanta, and the University of Kansas. That show will begin performances for an Off-Broadway revival at the end of June. Mr. Russell authored the book and lyrics for Elegies for Angels, Punks and Raging Queens, directing it in New York and London's Fringe and West End among many others, including a celebrity benefit in New York which was recorded by Fynsworth Alley. He wrote the book and lyrics for the Off-Broadway musical, The Last Smoker in America (original cast recording on Yellow Sound). Other collaborations with Henry Krieger include Lucky Duck, Kept, and Up in the Air, which premiered as part of the Kennedy Center's Japan festival. Other book and lyric credits include Fourtune and The Texas Chainsaw Musical (Off-Broadway) and Family Style (Minneapolis). Lyric credits include the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular, the duo Jade & Sarsaparilla and the official theme for Gay Games. He holds honorary doctorates from Morningside College and the Boston Conservatory.
