Biography

One of Broadway’s most sought after leading men; Brian Stokes Mitchell also enjoys a career in television and film, along with appearances in the great American concert halls. Recently, Mr. Mitchell made his cabaret debut at Feinstein’s at the Regency Hotel in his acclaimed show Love/Life which then moved to the Vivian Beaumont Theater at Lincoln Center. In June he headlined the Carnegie Hall concert presentation of Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific with Reba McEntire, which will air on PBS next year. In July he performed selections from Gershwin’s Porgy & Bess with Audra McDonald to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the opera. He then went to Sun Valley for another Gershwin benefit with Ms. McDonald. Highlights of his Broadway career include performances in Man of La Mancha (Tony nomination and Helen Hayes Award); Kiss Me Kate (Tony, Drama Desk and Out Critics Circle Awards); Ragtime (Tony nomination); August Wilson’s King Hedley II (Tony nomination); Kiss of the Spider Woman; Jelly’s Last Jam; and David Merrick’s Oh, Kay! His very long television career began with a seven year stint on “Trapper John, MD.” More recent television and film credits include recurring roles on “Crossing Jordan” and “Frasier,” PBS’ “Great Performances” and Dreamworks’ “The Prince of Egypt,” among numerous others.
