Maija Karklina



Biography

Maija Karklina (piano) is a senior lecturer at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz. She was born in 1987 in Jelgava, Latvia. Starting at the age of six she was taught by pianist Silvija Audre. In 2007 she continued her studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz with Otto Niederdorfer and Chia Chou. She also attended master classes by Einar Steen-Nøkleberg, Boris Beresowski, Michail Woskressenski, Henri Sigfridsson and Bruno Canino. Maija won several international competitions including the first prize at the Claudio Arrau Piano Competition in Chile and at the international piano competition Forum per tasti in Slovakia. She performs regularly as a soloist and accompanist in Austria, Latvia and Slovakia and is an active member of various chamber as well as contemporary music ensembles (for instance the award-winning Karklina Trio). In the 2016/2017 und 2017/2018 seasons she performed as soloist at the Wiener Musikverein with the Ensemble Kontrapunkte conducted by Peter Keuschnig.

The cello and piano Duo Lana Berakovic and Maija Karklina will introduce children and their families to the world of classical music through the enchanting melodies of the Stravinsky ballet “Pulcinella”, and thereby tell the story of one of the Italian Carnival’s most famous characters. The musicians belong to the ensemble of the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, Austria’s oldest music university.
