Jose Rivera creates collaged pieces that portray the diverse culture of the urban environment. Rivera’s style reflects influences from Africa, Spain, Puerto Rico, and the United States. He likes to use found objects to open up the artwork to opportunity and chance, along with other objects either bought or given to him by others. Rivera, who has a spinal cord injury and bipolar disorder, makes sure that every object incorporated into his pieces has a personal meaning to his own life. He has received numerous awards, including recognition from Outstanding Contributions to the Arts in the 16th Congressional District of New York from Congressman José C. Serrano. He lives in the Bronx and exhibits frequently in the New York metropolitan area.
