Juan Pierri has developed a personal iconography that reveals his cultural influences. Drawing from popular culture, personal reference, and a serious interest in the etymology of language, he creates a complex cultural/personal narrative by exploring the relationship between image and word in the media of painting and drawing. He is naturally drawn to subject matter that is popular and language-based. Pierri has created several four-by-five-foot canvases with anatomical icons as the main symbols. He surrounds the images with text (lists of his most cherished things and/or references to pop culture) that point to the main parts of the central image. Pierri, who has Down syndrome, receives artistic training from the Exceptional Children’s Foundation in Los Angeles and has participated in several exhibitions in the Los Angeles metropolitan area.
