Biography

Italian tenor Francesco Meli  makes his WNO debut in this production. He began his singing studies at age seventeen. In 2002 he made his professional debut at the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto, Italy in Macbeth, Petite Messe Solennelle, and Puccini's Messa di Gloria (broadcast by RAI). He has made debuts in Lisbon (Edmondo in Manon Lescaut), Bologna (L'elisir d'amore and La sonnambula), Teatro alla Scala (Dialogues des carmélites with Riccardo Muti and Otello), at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa (Fidelio, L'elisir d'amore, and Don Pasquale), in Zurich (Il barbiere di Siviglia), in Paris and at the Barbican (Don Giovanni), and in Florence and Verona (Così fan tutte). He also opened new productions of Don Giovanni in Valencia and at Teatro alla Scala. Upcoming engagements include his Metropolitan Opera debut in Rigoletto, where he will also sing in La traviata and a new production of Maria Stuarda; a new production of Anna Bolena and Simon Boccanegra in Vienna; Der Rosenkavalier at Teatro alla Scala; a new Luisa Miller in Florence; and Verdi's Requiem in Rome with Yuri Temirkanov.
