Bulgarian tenor Kamen Chanev (Chevalier des Grieux) makes his WNO debut with this production. He made his professional debut as the Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto at Sofia National Opera, where he has also performed the roles of Faust, Werther, Count Almaviva, Lensky, Edgardo, Tonio, Alfredo Germont, Belmonte, Tamino, and Don Ottavio. In recent years he has added more dramatic roles to his repertory, including Mario Cavaradossi, Erik, Don José, Radamès, and Calaf. His career has taken him to the Vienna State Opera, Bavarian State Opera, Teatro La Fenice in Venice, and houses in Frankfurt, Zurich, Catania, Tokyo, Antwerp, Valencia, Seville, and Tel Aviv, among others He has collaborated with conductors such as Lorin Maazel, Nicola Luisotti, Michail Jurowski, Paolo Carignani, and Asher Fisch. He has recently appeared in Manon Lescaut at the Hamburg State Opera, Aida at the Polish National Opera at the Grand Theatre in Warsaw, Carmen at Theater Basel, Attila at the Terme di Caracalla in Rome, and Cavalleria Rusticana at Teatro delle Muse in Ancona. In future seasons he will make his debut at the Berlin State Opera in Un ballo in maschera and will appear with Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma in Turandot. He studied at the Sofia-based Academy of Music and at Accademia Musicale in Rome. He is a laureate of the Jussi Björling Tenor Competition.
