James Rutherford



Biography

British bass-baritone James Rutherford makes his WNO debut in Tristan and Isolde in Fall 2013.  He has appeared with the Royal Opera, Covent Garden, Paris Opera, Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Cologne Opera and San Francisco Opera. He sang his first Hans Sachs (Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg) in Graz in 2009, returning for Barak (Die Frau ohne Schatten), Germont (La traviata), Iago (Otello), Orestes (Elektra) and Verdi’s Falstaff. He has sung Hans Sachs at the Bayreuth Festival (2010, 2011), Vienna State Opera, Hamburg Opera and Budapest Wagner Festival. He sang Le Roi (Massenet’s Le Cid) in Valencia with Domingo and Paolo Orsini (Wagner’s Rienzi) in Madrid with Mehta. Concert appearances include the Berlin Philharmonic, Bavarian Radio, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic and RAI Italia orchestras and the major UK orchestras.   Forthcoming engagements include Mandryka (Arabella) in Amsterdam and Hamburg, Lysiart (Weber’s Euryanthe) in Frankfurt and Rossini’s William Tell in Graz. In 2006 he won the inaugural Seattle Opera International Wagner Competition.
