    American Voices: Classical Master Session with Eric Owens


Edith Bers is professor of voice and chair of the voice department at The Juilliard School, where she has served on the faculty since 1985. She is also a member of the voice faculties at Manhattan School of Music, Curtis Institute of Music (adjunct), Bard Conservatory Graduate Vocal Arts Program, Metropolitan Opera Lindemann Young Artists Development Program. She has taught at numerous summer festivals including Ravinia Festival's Steans Music Institute, Bel Canto Institute (Florence), Aspen Music Festival and School, and Orford Festival (Canada). She has given master classes at Symposium on the Care of the Professional Voice, Aspen Music Festival, Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions, Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition, Juilliard-Hong Kong master classes at Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, and Korean Broadcasting System, among others. She has served as adjudicator for Concert Artists Guild, Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions, Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition (Brussels), and the Montreal International Musical Competition in Voice.

Her students perform with major opera companies, orchestras, and festivals throughout the world, including the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Philadelphia Opera, San Francisco Opera, Glimmerglass Opera, Wolftrap Opera, Berlin Deutsche Oper, Komische Oper Berlin, Canadian Opera, Glyndebourne Opera, Hamburg Opera, Paris Opera, Vienna State Opera, Frankfurt Opera, Saito Kinen Festival, and numerous Metropolitan HD performances.

Her students are winners of the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition, Opera Index Vocal Competition, Licia Albanese-Puccini Foundation Award, Young Concert Artists, Joy in Singing, and finalists in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Grand Finals and Francisco Viñas International Singing Competition. Her students are also winners of the Richard Tucker Award, Richard Tucker career grants, Sullivan Grants, Beverly Sills Award, and Richard Gold Award, among others.

Recognized as an internationally renowned voice teacher, Edith Bers has been interviewed for the New York Times, Opera News, the Wall Street Journal, Classical Singer, and Lettre du Musicien. Her career has spanned opera, recitals, orchestral concerts, and the U.S. premiere of Schumann's Des Sangers Fluch. She studied voice with Tourel, Callas, Faull, B.P. Johnson, Brown, Popper, Berl, Guth, Cuenod, Hotter, Stader; and acting with Stella Adler.
