Allison Hampton

Biography

Linn Barnes and Allison Hampton began their careers as a Renaissance lute duo, studying and performing the early music repertoire. Mr. Barnes studied with Jose Tomas and John Marlow. Ms. Hampton, who also studied with John Marlow, bears the distinction of being the first person to receive a bachelor of arts degree with a major in lute from American University. The duoÆs interest in Celtic music led Ms. Hampton to pursue the Celtic harp, while Mr. Barnes has added a variety of other instruments to the ensemble including Uilleann pipes, cittern, harp-guitar, and guitar.

In addition to major appearances in the Washington area, the duo has performed throughout North America and Europe. Several years ago, Barnes and Hampton traveled to Galicia, the Celtic part of Spain, to research the little-known music from that region. They collected music, and after bringing it home to learn and arrange, they produced their 14th CD, Galicia. During the summer of 1996 the duo performed their third concert for the Festival Interceltique de Lorient in Brittany, France, in addition to performances in Ireland. And for the last 20 years they have performed as part of the Dumbarton Concert Series.
