When Karen Savoca was thirteen, her family moved to the mountains of upstate New York, settling into a log home they built themselves. As a young girl Savoca was always singing and dancing. Eventually she was given piano lessons. She also bought herself a guitar with birthday money sheÆd saved and when no one was around she started composing. She wrote privately for many years, all the while performing at school, county fairs and coffeehouses.

Never doubting that she would live a life of music, Savoca attended Crouse College at Syracuse University, but found the curriculum operatic and restrictive. She switched her major to elementary education, where she developed passionate views about teaching young children. During that time she honed her singing style with several groups in clubs on and off campus.

Meeting up with guitarist Pete Heitzmanthe duo formed an all original, improvisation-laced band with jazz and funk players in the Syracuse area. Together, Savoca and Heitzman have have toured across the country, including five tours with Grammy nominee Greg Brown, with whom they have also appeared on National Public RadioÆs A Prairie Home Companion.
