Jane Franklin Dance


Jane Franklin Dance crosses disciplines in partnership with music, media, visual artists and community participants. The Northern Virginia based and Washington, D.C. metro area dance company incorporates active participation in dance by people of all ages; performs outdoors, in galleries and non-traditional sites; and offers performance collaborations blending dance with media and visual arts.

Jane Franklin is a recipient of the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region Creative Communities Initiative grant for a dance/video project inspired by round wall skateboarding. Jane Franklin Dance made its international debut in Puebla, Mexico with the interactive real time media piece “Temporal Interference,” which was also performed at the College of Arts and Media at University of Colorado, Denver and at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage. Dancers manipulate a life-size kinetic sculpture in Incidence which was presented by Mead Theatre Lab at Flashpoint, a program of the Cultural Development Corporation.

Most recently, Jane Franklin was selected for the 2010 Source Festival “Artistic Blind Dates,” for Forward 5, a professional development program of Dance/MetroDC, by Dance/USA to present a site specific performance at the Swedish Embassy, 2010 Velocity Dance Festival, and Atlas INTERSECTIONS Festival in March 2011.

A STAR Award recipient for “Outstanding Community Outreach,” Jane Franklin Dance’s ongoing projects include workshops with older adults and Forty+, a celebration of creativity, aging and dance developed by Jane Franklin in collaboration with community based dancers and performers over the age of 40. The group conducts free workshops and performances at Arlington community centers and has performed for the United States Environmental Protection Agency “Diversity Day,” in concert programs for Jane Franklin Dance. The company also conducts afterschool projects for youth and performances for children. Jane Franklin Dance tours for the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Paul Mellon Arts in Education Program and the Virginia Commission’s Tour Directory.
