Oscar Lopez


Born and raised in Santiago, Chile, Oscar Lopez established a musical career there as a composer as well as an instrumentalist. In 1979 he moved to Canada and now calls Calgary his home.

Lopez has been described in The Associated Press as ô...an elegant guitarist who fills his playing with depth and texture as well as fire.ö Z Magazine agreed, saying, ôThe fiery artistry of Chilean/Canadian guitarist Oscar Lopez reveals intimate knowledge of the entire spectrum of Latin-rooted guitar music. But itÆs his particular combination of technique, taste, and soul that makes him such a dazzling instrumentalist.ö

Lopez has performed with many friends and colleagues, among them Ali Farka Toure, David Lindley and Hani Nassir, Sierra Maestra, Don Ross, Martin Simpson, the Canadian supergroup The Cold Club, as well as Celtic artists James Keelaghan and John Whelan.

He earned three Juno Award nominations (CanadaÆs ôGrammyö) and his third album, ôDancing on the Moon Contio,ö was nominated for a 1995 Juno Award for Best Global Recording. Other Juno Award nominations followed and in 1999 he was named Instrumentalist of the Year in the first-ever Prairie Music Awards. He has performed at concerts and festivals across North America, and has been featured on Canadian television.

Lopez is a Narada artist and his recordings for that label have garnered positions on BillboardÆs charts. He has contributed also to Narada collections such as ôGypsy Soul,ö ôMasters of the Acoustic Guitar,ö ôObsession,ö and an all-Latin Christmas recording, ôLatino Christmas.ö
