FootworKingz

Biography

The FootworKINGz (FWK) are an astounding ensemble that represent an extraordinary urban dance, now globally recognized as “Chicago Footwork.” This technique is an extreme, lower body movement that evolved as a response to Chicago’s House, Ghetto House and speedy Juke music styles. FWK was founded in 2007 by Chicago native Choreographer & Hip Hop Educator, Leida “Lady Sol” Garcia.  Lady Sol began as a dancer in the 90’s who traveled and worked with musical artists & choreographers such as Twista, Busta Rhymes, Lauryn Hill, Heavy D., Bounty Killer, Dancehall Queen Patra, Fatima Robinson, Big Lez, and Caleaf Sellers.

“FWK’s first mission was to attract appreciation and respect among the international street dance community via battles/competitions, performances and workshops throughout US & Europe. We are on a present mission to preserve and present our “dance life” stories by fusing mixed media and text into our theatrical shows. My experience has been that many street dancers are frequently seen, but rarely heard and I am compelled to bring our vibrant voices to the stage,” expresses Lady Sol, FWK Director.

The FootworKINGz are currently featured in music videos with Maejor Ali feat. Justin Bieber and C2’s “Happy” which has brought choreography nominations to FWK member
King Charles. FWK has rocked stellar performances on MTV’s “Best Dance Crew,” Cedric the Entertainer’s Urban Circus, “America’s Got Talent,” Ellen Degeneres’ “Really Big Show” and Teen Choice Awards with Will.I.Am.

King Charles and Prince Jron have toured globally on Madonna’s “Sticky & Sweet” World Tour ‘08-‘09. Both are featured in Madonna’s music video “Celebration” and “Sticky & Sweet Tour DVD.”  Charles and Jron teach and perform regularly throughout Europe in Scandinavia, France, Belgium, Russia, and the UK including Paris’ annual Juste Debout. FWK has also worked with corporate clientele including IBM, Mc Donald’s, Nike, Red Bull, Visa, and General Mills.

In addition, FWK has appeared on major stages including Breakin Convention 2013 at Harlem’s Apollo Theater, Symphony Center alongside the Chicago Sinfonietta, Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), Coachella 2011 with Green Velvet, NYC’s Dancing in the Streets at the Lincoln Center, Juste Debout 2010 (Paris), Navy Pier’s Winterwonderfest, Steppenwolf Theater, Weber State University (Utah), and San Francisco’s International Hip Hop Dance Festival.

FWK’s press coverage includes a cover stories in the Chicago Tribune & Sun-Times, Red Eye, Southtown Star and features on NBC 5 News, WGN, Rolling Stone Magazine, Red Bulletin Magazine, Oprah’s “Rosie Show” and NBC’s LX TV’s 1st Look.

“We are extremely proud of our accomplishments and look forward to bringing our new theatrical show to audiences across the world. We are honored and privileged to premiere excerpts of this new work at the Kennedy Center in April 2014.”
