The Newark Boys Chorus School, founded in 1969 as the New Jersey Symphony Boys Choir, is a private school located in Newark, New Jersey. The school is fully accredited by the Middle State Association of Colleges and Schools and is responsible for the academic and musical education of 80 young urban men from the greater Newark area. The schoolÆs mission is to inspire in the students a love for learning, a quest for excellence, and a compassion for humanity.
Known as NewarkÆs musical ambassadors, the chorus has been heard throughout the world with a diversified repertoire that includes African folksongs, traditional classical music, spiritual folk music, and contemporary show tunes, pop, and jazz. This year, in addition to tours to Vermont, Maryland, Rhode Island, and Connecticut, the chorus will travel to Riga, Latvia; Helsinki, Finland; and St. Petersburg, Russia.
Academic potential is a principal criterion for admission to the chorus school. Each studentÆs potential is nurtured through an intensive educational program. These students are sought after by selective secondary schools nationwide, and most chorus school graduates continue on to prestigious colleges and universities.
Music Director Donald C. Morris began his involvement with the Newark Boys Chorus School in 1987 as a science teacher and associate conductor of the Concert Chorus. He has prepared the chorus for its tours of Czechoslovakia, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. Morris supervises the musical education and training of all the students at the school, and is active in presenting choral music seminars and workshops in the public school systems.
Morris has an M.A. in Music Education from Hunter College, a B.Sc. In Zoology and Chemistry from the University of the West Indies, and a L.R.S.M. (Licentiate of the Royal School of Music) in piano performance. He has trained at the Westminster Choir College in Conducting and Boy Choir Training and Repertoire. He also serves as Organist and Choirmaster at the Church of the Epiphany in Orange, and directs the St. LukeÆs Boys Choir in the Bronx. Before coming to the U.S., Morris served as Conductor of the Kingston College Chapel Choir and as assistant conductor of the National Chorale of Jamaica.
