Phlava Dance Company


Phlava Dance Company was founded by Millicent Johnnie and Traci Young in 1999 in Tallahassee, Florida. Phlava is Florida State University's first hip hop and jazz group and has become one of Florida's most distinguished hip hop companies. The company's mission has been to expand and enlighten societal views in all areas of dance, enabling dance to be seen through a wide spectrum, increasing the community's exposure through affordable public performances. This quest to work within the community has enabled the company to dance in many places across America. Nationally, Phlava has had the opportunity to perform at many universities including Amherst College, Tulane University, University of South Carolina, and Florida A&M University; but also has performed internationally in Prague, Czech Republic in the summer of 2002. Currently Phlava Dance Company is in its fourth season and is under the direction of Zakiya Alta Lee and Orialis Serrano.

Chantel Jiroch (Dancer) is a native of Miami, Florida. She is currently a senior at Florida State University majoring in dance She graduated from New World School of the Arts, and was nominated for ARTS recognition competition. She is also a member of the W.E.B DuBois Honor Society. Aside from dance she is a freelance photographer interested in pursuing a career in graphic design.

Orialis Serrano (Dancer) is twenty years old and currently enrolled in her senior year at Florida State University where she is pursuing her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in dance. She has performed in shows from Los Angeles to New York City, and has worked with professional commercial choreographers for celebrities such as Britney Spears, NSYNC, and Janet Jackson. Orialis has also had the opportunity to work with modern choreographers such as Geri Houlihan and Ron Brown, as well as tap dancers Savion Glover and Gil Stroming.

Joyletta Robeanna Finley (Dancer) moved to Jacksonville, Florida in 1988 where she started her dancing career at Buddy Sherwood studio. In 1994 she was accepted to Douglas Anderson School of the Arts where she performed in various plays and musicals like the Nutcracker and was a member of One Way Gospel Dance Company. After completing high school she was a NFL cheerleader for the Jacksonville Jaguars team for 3 years. She is currently majoring in nursing at Florida State University and has been a member of Phlava Dance Company for 2 years.

Kendra Andrews (Dancer) is from Tampa, Florida and is a senior at Florida State University. She is a dance major at FSU as well as a teacher assistant for the school's Gyrotonic Expansion System course. Kendra is pursuing certification for GXS in addition to a career in the arts. At Florida State, Kendra danced on the Golden Girls dance team for two years, and it is her first year with PHLAVA.

NaTonia Mone't Harrison (Dancer) is currently a double sophomore at Florida State University. Her majors are Dance and Sports Medicine. Dance has been a part of her life since the age of 4. Her dance training started at Richmond Dance Center, then after one year there her mother moved her to the Richmond Ballet. In addition to being a dance major she is in the Hip-hop/Modern/lyrical Company called Phlava and this is her second year.

Zakiya Alta Lee (Co-Artistic Director/Dancer) is a junior at Florida State University majoring in Dance. She is also presiding as the senator for the school of Visual Arts and Dance at FSU. Miss Lee began her training in her hometown of Raleigh, N.C. under the direction of Terry Lehman where she was trained in various forms of dance. Her international performance opportunities include dancing in the 1994 Goodwill Games in St. Petersburg, Russia and performing in Prague, Czech Republic International Festival just last spring.
