Sister Shirley

Sister Shirley has worked in the Gospel Music industry for over 40 years. She began singing at the age of five at her local Baptist Church in Southern Maryland. As a teenager she performed with her sisters in her local Church of God In Christ, where she was the choir director, and around the state and at national conventions.

She earned a B.S. degree in History from Coppin State College and a Master’s in Library Information Science from the University of Maryland College Park, and plans to complete a Ph.D. in African American Music History or Folklore.

As the leader of the Brooks Sisters and a member of the Green Sisters, a famous Baltimore group, she has performed along the Atlantic coastline, on TV and radio, in churches and auditoriums. One of her memorable performances was at the world famous Apollo Theater in New York on shows with the great Gospel singers in America. She has performed with Mahalia Jackson, Madam Ernestine Washington, and James Cleveland. Her performances have taken her all over America, Canada, Bermuda, England, Austria, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, and Switzerland.

Sister Shirley recorded with the Green Sisters, who did USO tours in the ‘70s and has recorded five CDs.
