Biography

The Washington Ballet @ THEARC Performance Ensemble is an audition-only group that performs regionally in the metro area. This vibrant troup is made up of 20 dancers that have performed at The White House, The Library of Congress, international embassies and more. The group performs classical ballet, jazz, modern, and African dance styles. The ensemble works with local and national guest artists and is under the direction of Katrina Toews. In today’s performance the Ensemble will also be joined by students from the SE campus of The Washington School of Ballet and DanceDC students. Students from the SE campus audition for placement and range in age from 4 -18 as well as DanceDC students are enrolled in DC public schools and are currently second and third graders. The Washington Ballet @ THEARC (TWB@THEARC) was born in 2005 and is housed in THEARC in Southeast Washington, DC. TWB@THEARC offers conservatory style classes as well as community classes for beginners. Classes for youth, adults and seniors run throughout the calendar year. All students are eligible to apply to dance through the sliding fee scale and 95% of students receive scholarships to attend the school. While the school uses The Washington School of Ballet curriculum students are also engaged in modern, west African, and jazz dance forms as well. Students from The Washington Ballet at THEARC present an evening of vibrant and visual dance. The program at TWB’s satellite campus in Southeast D.C. provides intensive and community-oriented ballet training for youth, ages 4–18, with programs that run throughout the calendar year with classes in the evenings and on weekends.
