Abigail Washburn

Abigail Washburn recently signed to Nettwerk Records and Monterey Peninsula Artists (Nashville) and is currently recording her first full-length album, to be released late spring/early summer. Keep your ears to the ground for the sounds of a cello ringing from Barbecue Studios in Nashville.

The solo demo, Here in this Room, a compilation of 6 original and traditional songs featuring the musicianship of Casey Driessen, Amanda Kowalski, Tim O'Brien, Russ Barenberg and Megan Gregory, sold out at festivals and performances throughout the summer. However, four new Chinese songs are added and being sold on a double EP, featuring both Here in this Room, and the Song of the Traveling Daughter (Younu Yin).

Song of the Traveling Daughter adds some new musicians to the mix with Beau Stapleton, Jason Oettel and Lucas Reynolds of Blue Merle. And, again, the playing of Casey Driessen, Amanda Kowalski and Tyler Grant are also featured. Three of the Chinese songs made their way onto the soundtrack for Quest USA/Da Tiaozhan, a Chinese reality TV show that aired on the international channel throughout the summer.

Abigail is just back to the U.S. from a tour in the People's Republic of China, joined by Casey Driessen, Amanda Kowalski and Tyler Grant. They played Universities, theatres and bars on their way from Beijing to Chengdu to Chonqhing to Shanghai with the help of their road manager and dear friend Jon Campbell, a freelance music journalist in Beijing. After the tour, Abigail went back west and to the south to study folk singing with new friends from Xinan Shifan Xueyuan and the Shanghai Opera, some of the new sounds you might hear on the upcoming Nettwerk release.

Abigail will soon be touring the country with Uncle Earl, an old-time string band. Uncle Earl recorded an album with Dirk Powell in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana this summer and will be releasing sometime in the near future.

Abigail and Beau Stapleton won second place in the Best New Bluegrass song category at the 2004 Merle Watson Memorial Festival Chris Austing songwriting contest this past spring for Rockabye Dixie (a.washburn, b.stapleton).
