Pasatono Orquesta will be performing music from their new album "Maroma". The music has some surprising references to dixieland jazz, which was popular in Mixtecan villages many years ago, as well as danzón and rumba. Some melodic lines that come from Hungary via the gypsy caravans that used to take cinema to the indigenous villages of the region. There’s also the chilena, considered to be ‘traditional Mixtecan music' as well as the polkas, paso dobles, marchas and mazurkas that came from Europe and took root in the local repertoire. Musical director Rubén Luengas adds his own personal journey to this mix with pieces he calls “Mixtecan-haiku,” that reflect his interest in minimalism, the tonality of his native Mixtecan language and environmental sounds.
