Meri Siirala



Biography

Soprano Meri Siirala graduated with a Masters in Music, receiving the highest grade from the Opera Department of the Sibelius Academy in 2008.  She has taken part in many Master Classes under the likes of Hartmut Höll, Roger Vignoles, Martin Katz, Tom Krause, Peter Kooij, Catherine Bott, Udo Reinemann, Ilmo Ranta, Eero Heinonen, Anna Bergamo, Wilma Vernocchi and others.  Her debut was in a highly acclaimed production of W. A. Mozart’s opera, The Magic Flute, as Queen of the Night with the Pori Opera Company in 2002, and later in Tallinn and Pärnu, Estonia, as well as at the Sibelius Academy.  Meri has also sung Violetta in the Giuseppe Verdi's opera, La Traviata, both at the Sibelius Academy and in the second act at a gala concert with Lohja City Orchestra in 2006. She also sung Adéle in the Johann Strauss operetta, The Bat and Fiordiligi, in Mozart’s opera Cosí fan tutte, both at the Sibelius Academy.  She sung the role of Vitellia in Mozart’s opera La Clemenza di Tito getting the best grade in a Sibelius Academy production at the National Opera of Finland in 2005.  In the spring of 2008, she sung the role of Bubikopf in the Finnish premiere of Viktor Ullmann's opera The Emperor of Atlantis. In the autumn of 2006 and in spring of 2007, she played the role of Tzeitel in the Jerry Bock musical, The Fiddler on the Roof in a praised Opera Verso production at Helsinki’s Alexander Theater and on tour around Finland. She sung in Avanti! Orchestra's production of Mozartmaschine in 2008.

Meri has worked with the following conductors: Pertti Pekkanen, Yuri Nitta, Christian Hauschild, Markus Lehtinen, Juhani Lamminmäki, Ilpo Mansnerus, Ari Angervo, Lehari Kaustel, Matti Oikarinen, Ilmo Riihimäki, Juha Nikkola, Anna Rombach, Juan Carlos Garriga Comas, Sasha Mäkilä and Lehari Kaustel.  She performs regularly as an oratorio soloist, in J.S. Bach’s St. John’s Passion, St. Matthaeus' Passion, Cantata BWV 51 Jauchzet Gott, G. Verdi’s Requiem, Mozart’s Requiem, Exsultate jubilate, Great Mass in c, A. Vivaldi's RV626 In furore iustissimae irae, Charpentier’s Messe de minuit, Orff’s Carmina Burana, Gothoni’s Der Ochs und sein Hirte and Schubert’s Mass in G, which was broadcast live on Estonian National television.   She also performs regularly with several baroque orchestras and ensembles. Meri has frequently made recitals with pianists Lotta Emanuelsson, Seppo Salovius and Kristian Attila at the Kirpilä concert series, the Kilpinen Society concert, the Hommage á Joonas Kokkonen concert, among others.  In 2006, she was awarded a scholarship for young, promising artists by the Martin Wegelius Society and in 2007 by the Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation.  Meri Siirala is a frequent soloist at many music festivals throughout Finland and in June 2008 she sang in Paris at the Finlande 100% Festival.

Her upcoming engagements include, among others, a tour around Finland with the Avanti! Orchestra production Mozartmaschine, and engagements on many festivals including a concert in Washington D.C. in May and in Paris in June 2009.
