Video 9/19/2015: SEPIA SCULPTRESS: The Life and Trials of Edmonia Lewis

Written and performed by Caroline Stephanie Clay, this performance is a look at the life of the 19th century sculptress. A rich celebration of artistic agency and freedom, emancipation, and the joys and challenges of creative genius. Her talents emerging in the days following the Civil War while a student at Oberlin College, Edmonia Lewis was an African American and Native American sculptor who worked for most of her career in Rome. Her work is known for incorporating themes relating to black and American Indian people into Neoclassical style sculpture. Part of the Women's Voices Theater Festival.
