The Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras of Strathmore

Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras of Strathmore (MCYO), founded in 1946, is the oldest, largest and most respected youth orchestra program in the region, attracting top musicians in grades 3-12. As the resident youth orchestra of the world-class Music Center at Strathmore, MCYO serves over 500 young select musicians annually in 6 orchestras, clarinet and flutes choirs, percussion ensemble and many other chamber music groups.
The MCYO Chamber Ensemble: This elite group of talented string players, ages 14 &15, go through a rigorous audition & selection process. The focus of the ensemble is to develop a deeper understanding of different musical styles, as well as to nurture musical leadership, through exploration of diverse repertoire. The ensemble performs without a conductor, entirely led by the students themselves.
The MCYO Harp Ensemble: This ensemble celebrates its 17th year, & currently resides at The Music Center at Strathmore in a collaboration between Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras (MCYO) and Levine Music. They are honored to have performed at many venues including The Kennedy Center Millennium Stage, Strathmore, Sydney Harmon Hall, Montgomery Performing Arts Center, The Arts Barn, Gildenhorn Recital Hall at the University of Maryland, the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington, as well as numerous community outreach engagements such as NIH Children's Inn and local retirement homes. The ensemble will be featured at the upcoming Newport News Harp Festival. Members perform regularly in MCYO orchestras and Young Artists of America, as well as attend prestigious summer programs such as Interlochen, the American Youth Harp Ensemble Summer Institutes, and Young Artists Harp Seminar, to name a few.
