American Dance Therapy Association

Dance as a fundamental art form, involves direct expression of one’s self through one’s body. It is an especially powerful medium for therapy. Established as an organization in 1966, the American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA) defines dance/movement therapy (DMT) as: “the psychotherapeutic use of movement as a process which furthers the emotional, cognitive, physical, and social integration of the individual,” based on research and findings indicating the body and mind are interrelated. Within DMT, expressive, communicative, and adaptive behaviors are all considered for group, individual, couples, & family treatment. Body movement simultaneously provides the means of assessment and the mode of intervention. Dance/movement therapists are employed in a wide variety of facilities as well as private practice. For more information on the ADTA and DMT, please visit: or find us on social media by searching “American Dance Therapy Association.”
