Biography

Rumah Gadang USA brings together dancers, musicians, singers, and actors who are interested in the Minangkabau. They are a performing arts and cultural group representing the land of Minang, West Sumatra, Indonesia, based in Washington D.C. They proudly bring an experience of Indonesia’s West Sumatra to the world. Founded in 2007 by husband and wife duo Afdal Koto and Nani Afdal, it has performed for the Indonesian Embassy in D.C., Dance Asian Festival, Richmond Folk Festival, Interfaith Live Music Concert at The National Cathedral, Fiesta Asia, Passport D.C., various International Embassies, Performing Indonesia Festival at Smithsonian’s Freer Sackler Gallery, and State University of New York - Department of Music.

Upcoming Performances

Video 9/30/2017: The Groove of Sumatra

House of Angklung, through the bamboo rattle instruments from West Java, will take the audience on a melodic and rhythmic journey to the rich culture of Sumatra (one of the main islands in Indonesia) and will include collaborative performance with Saroha and Rumah Gadang USA. At the end of the performance, the audience will have an interactive experience playing the angklung themselves.
