Dumi Right



Biography

Dumi RIGHT is a performing artist, MC, writer and organizer, who has been recognized as a standard bearer in global and progressive hip hop circles for many years. He was first introduced to audiences during hip hop’s golden age as a member of Zimbabwe Legit, one of the first African hip hop groups to gain international recognition.His influence has been documented in the domestic and international publications as well as in academic works of hip hop history, including Say It Loud! The Story of Rap Music by K. Maurice Jones and The Hip Hop Wars by Tricia Rose.

In the years since, he has remained immersed in the culture and business of hip-hop, releasing a number of noteworthy album projects and performing all across the country and on the world stage.

His craft is steeped in classic hip-hop styles, with thought-provoking lyrics and poignant wordplay over a backdrop of rugged beats from some of the underground’s finest producers. The scope and scale of his work exhibits broad geographic and cultural diversity with collaborations with artists from across the globe as well as notable US hip-hop luminaries, including the likes of the Jungle Brothers, Chubb Rock, Vast Aire, dead prez, YZ, Prince Po,
Breez Evahflowin’, C Rayz Walz and more.

Over the years, he has also served as point person for several events involving music, arts and culture, interacting with organizations and artists from a wide variety of different countries. Putting thought into action, Dumi recently helped to coordinate talent for and participate in the
inaugural, groundbreaking, Pitch & Flow entrepreneur pitch contest event in Washington DC. Hosted by MC Lyte and also featuring DJ Stretch Armstrong, Doug E. Fresh and DJ D-Nice, this event paired 8 dope, socially conscious emcees with 8 visionary entrepreneurs to pitch a compelling story of social enterprise, while addressing the United Nations' Global Goals in rhyme form.

In 2016, Dumi RIGHT was selected for a residency in Thailand teaching emceeing and hip hop culture to youth as part of the Next Level cultural exchange initiative through the US Department of State and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Dumi has also taken his message to academia and most recently shared his background and experiences in classes and panel discussions at the University of North Carolina, Howard University, UDC and at his Alma mater Virginia Tech University.

Akim Funk Buddha is a multi-faceted performance artist with talents ranging from high-energy Classic Hip Hop rhymes, beat-boxing and Mongolian throat-singing, to body-balancing, martial arts, tap dance, and circus arts. Akim creates borderless performance art fusing sounds and movements. He is known for his holistic approach to Hip Hop, drawing from a full spectrum of cultural traditions and artistic disciplines.
