Nuno Marques


Award-winning Portuguese pianist Nuno Marques is currently based in New York City where he develops his performing career and directs Porto Pianofest, an international piano festival in Porto Portugal of which he is the founder and artistic director. He is one of the most sought-after Portuguese pianists of his generation. A versatile musician, he is equally comfortable playing solo, chamber music or collaborating artistically with other forms of artistic expression.

Throughout his career, Mr. Marques had the opportunity to work with important pianists such as Lazar Berman, Irina Zaritzkaya, Vitaly Margoulis, Alexander Kobrin, or Dominique Weber; and chamber music with Bernard Greenhouse (Beaux Arts Piano Trio), Takacs Quartet, Florestan Piano Trio, Gary Hoffman and Ilia Grubert. He was awarded prizes in piano competitions in London and Portugal.

After finishing his early musical education in his native Portugal, Mr. Marques moved to London where he graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, studying with Artur Pizarro and Caroline Palmer. He then proceeded to study at the Royal College of Music, completing his Master’s Degree with Niel Immelman and, later, a second Master’s degree in Instrumental Pedagogy, at the Aveiro University, Portugal.

Nuno Marques moved to New York, attending NYU- Steinhardt School with Prof. José Ramón Méndez where he was awarded the prestigious Reinhold Scholarship which supported his studies and granted him the opportunity to make his New York concert debut and teaching at the NYU piano department. He’s currently completing his doctoral studies at Rutgers University in Piano Performance. His studies have been sponsored by the European Union (Dfes), NYU- Reinhold Foundation, Fundação Gulbenkian and the AAMSL.

As a soloist Mr. Marques performed with the Orchestra for Myanmar, Artave Orchestra, Orquestra do Norte, and recorded for Antena2 Radio Portugal and Centro Atlântico. He is committed to chamber music and is a founding member of prizewinning ensembles, with whom he performed throughout Europe and recorded for different labels. With a wide interest in contemporary music, he has performed with leading contemporary music ensembles, also having commissioned and premiered many works for solo piano and ensemble.

His most recent concerts took him to renowned music halls and festivals in Europe, Asia and the US, where he had his debut at Carnegie Hall in 2015, returning in 2017 for a second performance. Mr. Marques has also embarked twice on a concert tour in China. He was invited to give masterclasses in Portugal, Spain, World Piano Congress in Serbia, Myanmar, China and the US.

Interested in exploring new ways of expression, Nuno Marques also collaborates frequently with Daniel Ulbricht, NYC Ballet principal dancer and director of Stars of American Ballet. In 2016 Nuno Marques founded Porto Pianofest, a new international piano festival in Porto, Portugal, which brings together pianists from all over the world in a week of concerts and masterclasses.

He is the artistic director of the festival, which has also expanded its activity to New York and will soon have its Chicago and Montreal presentations. Nuno Marques is passionate about traveling, literature and photography
