Sriram Gopal

Biography

Sriram Gopal is a proud son of Maryland and has called Washington, D.C. home since 2006. He has performed throughout the DMV since the mid-'90s, with shows at Blues Alley, Strathmore, Twins Jazz, Bohemian Caverns, the DC Jazz Festival, and the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage. Sriram has a long-held monthly residency at Bossa Bistro + Lounge in D.C.'s Adams Morgan neighborhood. While there is no set lineup of players, the aesthetic has always been consistent. The goal is to play music that incorporates any and all influences while retaining a strong commitment to melody, groove, and improvisation. The rotating set of musicians that Sriram draws from have ranged from the area's best jazz musicians, hop-hop artists, classical Indian musicians, and poets.

Tonight's ensemble includes Shannon Gunn, an award-winning trombonist and leader of the Bullettes, the area's only all-female big band. Keyboardist Geoff Rohrbach and Sriram have been working together on-and-off for nearly 20 years, releasing the 2005 album, One And One Makes One, as The Duology Band. Bassist Ben Rikhoff is the latest member in Sriram's circle of collaborators. The performance features material from Gopal's 2016 album, The Fourth Stream, which Washington City Paper named as one of the best local jazz releases of that year, along with original compositions by band members.
