Deviated Theatre

Biography

Deviated Theater gave its debut with Aspiro – step into curiosity at Dance Place in Washington, D.C. in July, 2008, to sold-out performances that were previewed in The Washington Post. In less than one year, the emerging company completed seven successful performance runs in the Washington and Baltimore metro areas and has recently been accepted into Dance/metroDC's pilot program Forward Five for 2010. More than two dozen actors and dancers comprise Deviated Theater, whose flair for original and creative works is captured in their favorite catch phrase, “Depart from the norm!” Co-Directors Enoch Chan and Kimmie Dobbs Chan write, choreograph, and produce all-new works, such as 2008's Aspiro, 2009’s Lore, and 2010's Sway, which debut in performances by this celebrated dance troupe. The Chans' original productions can be described as “operas of movement,” in which scenes range from pure physical acting to those of powerful dance choreography, and everywhere in-between. Full musical scores carry the audience from moment to moment, and a minimalist stage allows for stark imagery to resonate: a beloved white umbrella, a 40-foot swath of red fabric, a glowing crystal amulet, a magical mirror more than 14 feet high. The productions are characteristically fantastical in nature. Chans' initial production of Aspiro reminded Baltimore City Paper theatre and dance critic Ruth Reader of an Edward Gorey children's novel. "What was most inspiring about this spot-on performance," Reader wrote, "was not only the level of professionalism but also the sense of purpose in each dancer and in the show as a whole."
