Funk is a feeling, a groove, and a vibration. Funk is a state of mind. And Chocolate City, as DC is affectionately known, is home to some of the world’s thickest funk vibes. The Good Thing is a funk band from the Nation's Capital; soul, rock and blues can also be heard in their unique sound. Featuring lead vocalist and bassist Kim Jade Fry, the Good Thing came to get down!
Kim Jade lays down some hard-core bass grooves and sings with a whole lotta soul, The Good Thing is not afraid to challenge the audience and keep them on their toes. Dancing and grooving are in order as the band goes from old school blues 'n' funk to classic soul, only to surprise you with some rock thrown in for good measure.
Bandleader Kim Jade Fry and “The Good Thing” both rely heavily on the chops of a DC legend, guitarist Charles Wright. An alumnus of the Duke Ellington School for the Arts, Charles Wrights' DC roots are deep and he can often be heard leading the Charles Wright Trio or Stone/Wright. One of DC’s best pocket drummers, Paul Dudley, is another major part of the band. Paul’s vast experience ranging from soul, jazz, gospel and hip-hop drumming is called upon as the band pushes the limits of funk. The trio of Kim, Paul and Charles forms the backbone of the band and the horns are filled out with some of DC's busiest gigging musicians who each bring something special to the group.
Since the explosion of funk music in the 1970's, DC has been a city dedicated to giving up the funk!! The Good Thing seeks to continue that tradition and blends together all the composite elements, while bringing some fresh new perspectives to the mix. While the band is made up of serious musicians, the music is meant to be fun and that’s rule number one. So let's get funky and keep it on the "one"! Get out on the dance floor, flash a big smile and get down!
