In 1976 Karen Ashbrook built her first hammered dulcimer as a high school project. In search of Irish music she went overseas and spent 5 years playing in Europe and Asia, traversing the globe twice. Recognized as one of the top professional dulcimer teachers and performers nationwide, she also runs the Sligo Creek Hedge School, an Irish music and culture camp for youth, and is a Certified Music Practitioner. Several of her recordings are on the Maggie’s Music label. Her “Playing the Hammered Dulcimer in the Irish Tradition” book/CD set is a standard text in dulcimer literature. Sponsored by Muziekmozaïek (the Flemish folk music guild), Ms. Ashbrook produced the first dulcimer / hakkebord tutorial in continental Europe, with instruction in English, Dutch, and French.
The multi-instrumentalist is joined by his musician wife on the hammered dulcimer and wooden flute for a program of traditional instrumental music. Presented in cooperation with the Embassy of Belgium as part of the “European Month of Culture.”
