Ich wollt' ein Sträusslein binden (?I Would Have Made a Bouquet?), Op. 68, No. 2, is from the set of six so-called Brentano-Lieder , songs to poems of Clemens Brentano, composed in 1918. Strauss orchestrated the last song in this set in 1933, and the other five, including this one, in 1940. Brentano is remembered as one of the editors (together with his brother-in-law Achim von Arnim) of the collection of German folk poetry published in 1805 under the title Des Knaben Wunderhorn? poems made familiar to musical audiences in the Mahler settings which are to be performed in next week's NSO concerts. The text Strauss chose for this song is in the character of the Wunderhorn poems and may have been adapted from that source.
