About the Program

Artists:
With her intimate knowledge of George Balanchine's canon, Suzanne Farrell carries forth his legacy through the Kennedy Center's own ballet company. This engagement showcases her teaching gifts through a partnership with Cincinnati Ballet, a nationally renowned beacon of dance from her home town.

Bugaku, set to music by Mayuzumi, recalls a Japanese wedding ceremony. Balanchine's elegant Chaconne, featuring music from Gluck's opera Orfeo ed Euridice, will be performed by The Suzanne Farrell Ballet and dancers of Cincinnati Ballet; Farrell will first teach and stage it in Cincinnati before bringing it to D.C. Meditation, performed to the music of Tchaikovsky, was created for Suzanne Farrell and Jacques d'Amboise in 1963. Brahms-Schoenberg Quartet premiered in 1966 and features music by Brahms.

Each program also highlights the Balanchine Preservation Initiative, Farrell's re-staging of his "lost" or rarely seen ballets. Ballade, an extended pas de deux performed to Fauré's music, evokes themes of fleeting romance and remembrance. Pithoprakta is danced to a score by Greek composer Iannis Xenakis, while the Pas Classique Espagnol is a re-discovered divertissement from Balanchine's Don Quixote.
