About

Nikolaj Znaider, who "plays with a poetic elegance" (The New York Times), begins his two-week NSO residency with Brahms's Violin Concerto. Once famously called "against the violin," this daunting work of broken chords, rapid scales, and rhythmic variations is now a highly revered showcase for gorgeous melodies with a distinctive Hungarian flavor.

Debussy's La Mer is a musically impressionistic exploration of the sea. Through a kaleidoscope of orchestral colors and textures, this sumptuous tone poem symphonically depicts in three movements the dawn's early light upon the ocean, the frolicsome play of the waves, and the tumultuous dialogue between wind and water.

Conductor Cristian Macelaru is "the real thing, displaying confidence [and] expressiveness," says the Chicago Sun-Times. He also returns to the NSO to conduct Fauré's Pavane and the first NSO performances of music by Pierre Jalbert.
