"American ballet at its peak!"
--The Washington Post
"Glorious passages of choreography… witty timing and humor"
--The New York Times
For five performances, the stage explodes with one show-stopping performance after another in American Ballet Theatre's Don Quixote, hailed as a feast of "choreographic fireworks" by New York Newsday. Matadors, gypsies, lively street scenes, and a giant windmill all evoke a storybook Spain, powered by nonstop dancing set to Ludwig Minkus's melodic score. The New York Times says ABT's dancers "have exactly the right tone of… enjoyment to make the audience relish every finger-snapping, high-jumping moment."
The company also dances an exciting program of works from its acclaimed repertory. Michel Fokine's Les Sylphides, a one-act romantic reverie, is a plotless work in which a poet dances with ghostly sylphs in a forest to music by Chopin orchestrated by Britten. The program includes the D.C. premiere of ABT Principal Dancer Marcelo Gomes's Aftereffect, which was given its world premiere in October 2013 and is danced to the first movement from Tchaikovsky's Souvenir de Florence. Celebrating 450 years since Shakespeare's birth, the company dances The Dream, Sir Frederick Ashton's enchanting one-act ballet based on A Midsummer Night's Dream, and features sopranos Jennifer Cherest and Melissa Mino singing in German with the Arlington Children's Chorus.
